Phd Thesis On Psychology Graduate Curriculum
Independent Research courses allow you to get involved in research more intensively but is not as involved as a thesis. Students work in close collaboration with a professor to review the literature, devise hypotheses, design, carry out, and write up a research project. This can be a good alternative to a thesis, if you are interested in the research but not the major writing and year-long commitment that a thesis involves. The Independent Study option requires that you study a topic that is not offered in the regular Psych curriculum, via library research, reading, writing, and discussion with the professor. Both types of Independent courses require scheduled weekly meetings with the professor and a significant amount of time and effort, equivalent to a regular 3000 or 4000-level course. Arrangements for Independent Study must be made with the professor before the semester starts and requires writing a proposal to outline. These course credits count as general upper division electives. They don’t count as the Psychology electives since they are 1) graded only on a Pass/Fail basis, 2) they don’t cover one specific area of Psychology.
This preliminary stage of the psychology thesis process assumes that you have a general research idea in mind. Whether you consider this idea to be somewhat vague or well developed (the former being the most likely) you must establish and maintain a clearly defined focus throughout your investigation.
The minimum number of members for a dissertation committee is five. All Committee members must hold a primary appointment in some Department of the University of Miami or hold an adjunct appointment in the Department of Psychology. Three members, including the chair or co-chair of the committee, must be members of the graduate faculty of the University of Miami. At least two members of the committee, including the chair or co-chair, must be from the primary Psychology faculty, and a majority of the committee must hold appointments in the Department of Psychology (primary, secondary, or adjunct). One member must be from outside the primary faculty of the department.Following the execution of the research, the student will prepare the thesis, or dissertation manuscript. The Graduate School has granted permission to the Department of Psychology to have theses and dissertations written in a form consistent with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Students should follow the Manual in preparation of all research reports. Additional preparation guidelines may be obtained from the Dissertation Secretary, Graduate School, Albert Pick Hall (Brescia Avenue). Thesis and dissertations can be written in a publication style to facilitate publication. At the advisor’s discretion, students can be asked to complete more lengthy literature reviews and discussions. Question: What happens if I cannot meet the deadline Spring semester but will be completing the thesis soon thereafter -- can I still walk at the graduation ceremonies? Answer (from Interim Chair Larry Bolen, April, 2005): "There is considerable precedent. Any student, graduate or undergraduate, that will complete all requirements for the degree prior to Fall semester may walk in May. These students, then, should contact the president of Psi Chi to have their names added on the list for the Psychology graduation ceremony. If a student, in order to complete the degree, must attend Fall semester (i.e. be enrolled), then he or she may not walk in the May graduation.
If you’re thinking about graduate or professional school (med, law, MBA), or if you just would enjoy the challenge of independent research in psychology, you might want to consider completing an undergraduate thesis. To learn more about what the thesis entails, you should attend one of the thesis/ grad school information sessions that we hold about twice a year in conjunction with the undergraduate Psychology Students Association, and speak with
Dr. Colleen Carney, the Undergraduate Thesis Coordinator.
